About Blue Willow
{artist Suzanne Banks}

A few years ago when her chosen career in the field of environmental science became too stifling, Suzanne decided to take up ceramics, and Blue Willow Studio was born of an impulsive desire to create. The entrapments of the ceramic artist soon filled her basement studio in the suburbs of Philadelphia, PA, and slabs of clay, myriad tools, rainbows of glazes and random doodles and sketches spread to envelop every room of her home. As a self-taught artist, Suzanne takes her inspiration from the simple beauty of nature and the complex intricacies of traditional Celtic knot designs. She began by creating pressed ceramic tiles, brush-glazed in a single color. However, as the constant clamor of ideas and inspirations begged for material existence, she experimented with various decorative techniques (carving, sgraffito, cuenca, appliqué, stamping) and began applying her designs to other hand-built ceramics including tableware, coasters, ornaments and planters. Some would say she has not yet found a cohesive voice, but Suzanne asks, why place boundaries on creativity?
